Demonstrate Physical Defensive Restraining Techniques

This unit standard replaces: Master Restraining Techniques – SAQA 14130 – NQF Level 5 (Credits 6)

 

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

 

This unit standard is for learners in the law enforcement environment who demonstrate physical restraining techniques when dealing with persons who contravene the law or as self-defence in cases of personal attacks.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:

 

Apply physical restraining techniques.

  • Use a tonfa and or baton.
  • Defend oneself against offenders.
  • Demonstrate the application of the concept Verbal Judo.
  • Demonstrate the application of searching techniques.

 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

 

  • Communication at NQF level 4.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

 

The purpose of different restraining techniques and associated equipment are explained in terms of their uses.

 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

 

Restraining techniques includes:

  • Restraining techniques which includes the use of restraining equipment. Restraining techniques which do not include the use of restraining equipment.

 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

 

The requirements for the use of restraining equipment are described in terms of prescriptive legislation.

 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

 

Restraining equipment refers to:

  • Hand-cuffs.
  • Leg-irons.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

 

The ways to use restraining techniques and equipment is demonstrated to secure the safety of oneself and of the offenders.

The legal requirements for the use of the tonfa is identified according to relevant legislation.

The different methods of carrying a tonfa are demonstrated to minimise discomfort and safe use thereof.

The basic principle of weapon-less defence is explained in order to determine when it should be used.

 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

 

The basic techniques of weapon-less defence are applied against an unarmed offender.

 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

 

The basic techniques of weapon-less defence are applied against an armed offender.

 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4

 

The ability to escape when taken to ground by an offender is demonstrated in order to free oneself.

 

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4

 

Demonstrate the applications of the concept Verbal Judo.

Searching techniques against armed offenders are demonstrated in order to apprehend a suspect.
